Beyond the Binary Workshop

Creating Gender-Inclusive Spaces in a Time of Political Uncertainty

About the Workshop:

Research shows that how caregivers and teachers treat gender, both implicitly and explicitly, has lasting effects on a child’s sense of identity, sense of self-efficacy, and overall development. With gender inclusion under political scrutiny, it’s more important than ever to create spaces where young people feel affirmed. We invite parents, caregivers and educators to participate in an experiential workshop about creating intentionally inclusive spaces around gender that allow our children to grow into their authentic selves.

By illuminating certain assumptions that support current cultural norms with regard to gender, and through the study of the research of neuroscientist Lise Eliot, this workshop will allow participants to consider some of the messages they currently impart regarding gender. Participants will develop a set of values regarding gender, and link those values to specific tools they can implement moving forward to ensure gender-inclusive spaces.

We will explore how gender norms are shaped, the latest research on biological sex differences vs environmental learning, and practical ways to support gender identity development in children—despite restrictive policies.

Learning Outcomes:
Through this interactive experience, participants will have the opportunity to:
• Explore their own experiences with regard to gender, taking into account a cis-heteronormative framework
• Consider recent research on biological sex differences and how they relate to gender differences through learned assumptions
• Examine various treatments of gender in society, including in schools and early childhood literature
• Develop a set of tools to contribute to gender inclusive spaces that can be applied both at home and/or in public spheres even if executive orders on gender remain in place
