Keko Rivera-Colon got xeir start in music at the tender age of 8 years old through xeir public school’s music program for low income families. What started as an interest in the trumpet soon blossomed into a love for any and every instrument including the world's most unique and individualized instrument; the human voice. As an indigenous person, xe grew up having been taught that the voice is one of the most precious gifts one can have; it connects the soul to the spirit and in turn should only be utilized and expressed in an instrumental form when feeling safe and in good care of others. Through the combination of xeir ancestral beliefs, musical knowledge and passion for singing Keko was enthralled to have found such a beautiful organization to lend xeir voice to. Upon joining the Queer Joy Chorus Keko felt instantly at home and the desire grew to not just sing with the chorus but to give back to an organization that has given xem so much over the years. Keko is proud to serve on the board for the QJC and looks forward to many more years of fostering connection, cultivating peace and growing together as a diverse community with the intention of spreading as much joy to the world as possible.
